Department of Education Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto spends a moment with Kalani students Kristina Kuo and Rainer Tanaka after their Micro Innovation Grant presentation at the superintendent's conference at the Hawaii Convention Center on July 12, 2019.

Also presenting was Mr. Trung Lam (below) who helped to organize a Python boot camp by JrDevLeague.

Principal Mitchell Otani supported the venture as a way to diversity student learning and express and honor student voice.

Picture
Mr. Lam has been volunteering Thursday afternoons throughout the school year and during session breaks at Kalani for over six years.  During this time, he has positively influenced and enhanced the lives of many students and adults, while also donating human and material resources to build the Kalani HS Maker Club program. His mechanical engineering and business expertise have been priceless, as was his even-keeled counseling. Along the way, he also contributed to the Kalani FFA and more recently to the Kalani Robotics Drone Program. He has made sure that Kalani was always represented professionally at the annual Maker Faire and at other community and educational venues.
Mahalo for all the time you, your family and La Tour Bakehouse have given to Kalani and the community.

Micro Innovation Grant Overview for Superintendents Conference
Mahalo to Dr. Kishimoto, Kalani Principal Mitch Otani, Mr. Trung Lam and the Office of Innovation support team for supporting this venture into innovation. A group of 14 students (grades 9 to 12) completed a Python Boot Camp in spring 2018.  Soon after, an opportunity came along to build a Project Lemon Tree pergola at Jefferson Elementary School and our students and McKinley students took it on as a service project and as a prospective ag control/monitoring site.

Since then, we have successfully tested an inexpensive DIY Raspberry Pi ag control unit that runs on Python coding and has Temperature and Humidity inputs; solenoid control outputs; and video.  We plan to install this at the Kahauiki Village garden and at school sites.

The project opened up another opportunity to become a MicroSoft "Farm Beats" ag control test site, and we will implement in fall 2019.

STUDENT SURVEY:
Students were grateful for the opportunity to learn and enjoyed the 21 hour Python course by the Jr. DevLeague.
Students asked for more training to include more real-world interactions.

Next up: Kalani Maker Club collaboration with Meakala Wilhelm on prototyping her vertical garden design.  Meakala's sustainability project is a liter bottle static hydroponics unit that will bring gardening to condo and city dwellers. Below is her prototype that will evolve into a unit that does not need fasteners for assembly. KUPU intern Kelli Ann Kobayashi was Meakala's mentor and also organized a community garden project, supervised 9th grade Imi Loa house students and worked with a team of juniors to grow vegetables.  Mahalo Kelli Ann and KUPU for making a difference!

UPDATE: Congratulations Kelli Ann on your acceptance into the UH Manoa Richardson School of Law!

APRIL 30, 2019
KUPU intern Kelli Ann Kobayashi arranged for a meeting with the Roosevelt HS Gardening Club, a possible FFA Chapter in the near future.  Below are three sophomore members setting up drip irrigation for a planter box. This is the first step in building a sustainability partnership with RHS.

From left below are Jaxine Wong, point of contact Kevin Davis and Ren Bin Lin.  Missing is Celina Shoda who also helped set up the irrigation nozzles.

The Gardening Club began with an idea from a classmate and fellow Biology student "Charlie" and her interest in aquaponics.  The ninth graders got the aquaponics system running before confronting pump problems that will be addressed this fall. Prior to the pump issue, the group grew enough produce to make a salad.  The aquaponics theme morphed into gardening and as sophomores, the students are starting with a planter box for vegetables, including cucumber. This summer, the aquaponics system will be maintained by Kevin who will be on campus for football practice. The Gardening Club is advised by Ms. Kendig.

Kalani FFA and Maker Club students assist the East Honolulu Rotary and Men's Leadership clubs with pergola build between Buildings E and J on April 27, 2019.  Apologies and thank yous to Dr. Ida's AP prep class for relocating while the construction ensued.  The pergola is part of the Bizgenics "Project Lemon Tree" that has a vision of planting the very efficient carbon-sequestering lemon trees at schools across the state. The project informs students about actions they can take and lessons they can learn to control climate change. Ms. Doran's FFA and Mr. Trung Lam's Maker Club students contributed many hours before and during the assembly.

Kalani HS Principal Mr. Mitchell Otani provided the materials and is hopeful that other schools will find ways to advance sustainability awareness through student action.  The pergola will become a trellis to support lemon trees that will eventually form a canopy over the walkway.

Students prepared and pre-cut posts, beams and rafters and column components the week before the build.  Organizers were Katheren Lam and Hanson Loi and other makers.  FFA and Maker members are below:

Aloha Kekahi i Kekahi

thank you Peter for giving up your valuable time, engaging our students, sparking innovation and sharing your skill set with us.

Makers were treated to an incredible visit/chat/impromptu comic drawing demonstration by Peter Nguyen, a Marynoll graduate (later California State U system grad).  Of note, Peter is a world-class artist who sketches for Marvel and DC comics. He also does customized and period or era-accurate super hero drawings across time periods. For example, Robin to Night Wing and Batman through the ages.

He is also a sought-after artist and appears at comic-cons with national and international scope.
As an artist, he works virtually with a team based all over the planet.

May 23 Breaking News! Mililani Trojan FFA Power!

Welder Jeff Yamaguchi and Welding Apprentice Christopher Sato with their Kahauiki "Paikikala" Bike Rack to be used for a village bike-share project.  Jeff and Chris are also the Mililani High School Natural Resources and Journalism teachers, respectively.  Chris is the force behind the Kahauiki videos and the "B-Roll" that aired on KITV on May 12 and May 13, 2018 with help from Jean Nakanishi of IQ 360 media.

The village needed a bike rack to park FFA-restored bikes so Mr. Yamaguchi volunteered to study commercially-made racks, procure the materials and then build his own. The industrial-quality rack will be donated to the village soon.

The Mililani HS Agriculture Education (now Natural Resoures) and FFA Program has maintained the agricultural mechanics curriculum that once flourished at many high schools. Contrary to some curriculum experts, there is a very strong need (with enticing career opportunities) for agricultural mechanics training for students who like to problem-solve (troubleshoot), plan and design life-scale and quality products (as stated in the GLOs).

Consider this Mililani FFA "New Century" Math Equation:

50m + 2ps = 500r

Translation: $50 in scrounged materials Plus two teachers with priceless skills equals a $500 bike rack.

Of course, those of us in ag ed know better.  Every NR does not need to do ag mechanics because every NR program has unique strengths.  IMUA Hawaii FFA.

Is a sustainable return-on-investment (ROI) attainable with urban farming, and how can students of the digital world apply abstract learning to the challenges of food security?

Thanks to a DOE MIF grant, the Kalani FFA Makers will learn PYTHON coding this spring 2018 and use it to program Raspberry Pis to poll remote agricultural sensors and apply collected data to farm management. The Design Thinking process will be applied to challenge students to develop innovative and cost-effective food production solutions. The class will begin on April 4, 2018 and run through May 21, 2018 and will be taught by the Jr. DevLeague (JDL) of Honolulu.  The JDL has a strong presence in many public and private schools and is a force behind helping students to learn coding.  Everyone should give coding a chance because programming surrounds us and will affect every single career you can imagine.

We will use the Python programming of Raspberry Pi mini-computers as a prelude to the evolving MIT Personal Food Computer build that started two years ago after a TedX presenation at the UH Manoa School of Architecture. Please start to think about Ag Tech or applying appropriate technologies to food production in Hawaii and and then sharing tech globally.  Think about how the Kalani FFA Makers can find better ways to produce and consume food locally and look at exporting ideas and agricultural technologies (as opposed to exporting food). What added costs would out-of-state consumers have when buying food grown in Hawaii?

There is a strong and growing interest in setting up an MIT Media Lab program based at Kalani HS and Principal Otani is supporting the venture.
FIRST STEPS: PYTHON is up and running as of Wednesday, April 4, 2018.  Mellanie and Ian of the Junior DevLeague (JDL) are shown below at our first training session. Students are sharing dream scenarios of the future - including stepping in virtual worlds and special shoes.  We saw a video featuring young programmers who built companies like Drop Box and Clothia.  They spoke of coding as tools of new "Magicians" and as ways to help humanity.
Future meetings will start at 2:45 p.m. and end at 4:15 p.m., beginning on Monday, April 9, 2018.  Mahalo Stephane Ly, Dr. Ida, Ms. Doran, Mr. Silver and Mr. Otani for helping us with a lab, students, and grant support, respectively. Thank you also to JDL for giving us a chance.

Program Foundations

25 years ago agriculture teachers crafted a strategic view and three strategic dimensions (programs, personnel, partnerships) to chart their mission. These strategic dimensions connect to the GLOs and the student-centered framework of today.

February 24, 2018 Kahauiki Homeless Village FFA Educational Garden

Thank you National FFA Organization for funding the project

FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) students and advisors (total 38) from across the state installed a teaching garden at the Kahauiki Homeless Village as a National FFA "State Day of Service" project.  The unique village idea came from Mr. Duane Kurisu who believes that the concept of "community" must come before the building of a "shelter."  Community-building and sharing is a strength of Hawaii and of the immigrant plantation camps that were found wherever sugar cane was grown. The event was documented by the Mililani School Journalism class at

Support Local Agribusinesses: Fukuda Seed Store
For generations, agriculture teachers from across the state have gone to Fukuda Seed Store for quality and hard-to-get seed and ag supplies. Many will still remember the old store off King and Dillingham. The "new" location is next to the Kapalama Canal Police sub-station on Kalani Street - kinda makai and across the street from Young's Fish Market and Kamehameha Bakery.  About a half block Ewa of the store is Woodcraft. Before he passed away, this was Uncle Stephen Kow's favorite seed store.

Kahauiki Village Garden Project
FFA volunteers (38 students and teachers) built a teaching and learning garden facility next to the Kahauiki Village Laundromat. The outdoor classroom is an 18' x 20' tarp structure covering 2 large and 1 mini picnic table, 3 benches and a sink for washing produce.  Next to it are two modules (20' x 20') with four 6' x 16' in-ground raised beds.  A fourth module will have two 4' x 8' static hydroponics beds, an on-ground mini-nursery and a water catchment or future aquaponics tank.

The growing beds will be monitored from FFA school programs by wifi-connected raspberry pis and arduinos.

February 15 and March 1, 2018
David Chow of the Straub Hospital IT Department, came to share interview skills with the maker group. Students were captivated by his message (see below). He also volunteered to return to share career-building ideas (and build a stage). David  is the owner of Tokuei Management Solutions, LLC, a management consulting company that provides career mentoring to high school and college students.  Specific services offered include resume writing and review as well as job interview coaching. (See Donations and Contacts section for more on David).  Mahalo David!

Below: Chinese taro (Bun Long) overview and photos from FFA District practice and chickens
Regarding Taro or Kalo:
There are essentially four types of planting material that are used in taro production:
i) Side suckers produced as a result of lateral proliferation of the main plant in the previous crop;ii) Small corms (unmarketable) resulting from the main plant in the previous crop;
iii) Huli i.e. the apical 1-2 cm of the corm with the basal 15-20 cm of the petioles attached;
iv) corm pieces resulting when large corms are cut into smaller pieces.
For our project, we replanted small corms or "cormels".  When the corms get bigger, we will prepare "huli" (stem/shoots with a layer of corm material) for replanting.

A Special Message from Uncle Ken for Ag/FFA Teachers (repeated in the "About" section)

"Why FFA/Ag-Natural Resources Education and the Path Onward"

FFA and Ag/Natural Resources works.  It is relevant and engaging and delivered by dedicated and caring teachers who are informed by the needs of today and tomorrow and by a 90-year culture of John Dewey-based pedagogy.

How do we continue to contribute to the greater good?

Know and honor the internal environment and use this knowledge to get help
We are part of public education so master the DOE's mission and goals and be a smart part of the solution. Yup, learn about standards/benchmarks and the Next Gen Science Standards.  Do the CASE institute and help position our ohana to give our students science credit.

Know the external environment and choose your partners wisely
Join the groundswell of grassroots, commercial and government ag and sustainability partners and contribute time and resources to the movement.  Attend the AG2017 Conference (August 29 and 30, 2017 at the Hawaii Convention Center) with your students, join hands with our many friends and show the public what we can do, how we teach leadership, STEM, science and technology, and reinforce basic academic skills.

Coalesce your needs and speak with one voice from our Strategic Plan
Tired and frustrated as you may be, make time to talk with your students and partners and articulate your needs and views in the Ag Ed/FFA Strategic Plan.  This plan will be the document that will be used to generate fiscal and human resources, build programs and partnerships, and grow your skill set through professional development.

In other words, either step up or step aside and let things happen to you.  Join the team and let's attack our challenges.

Keep up your great work!
Imua Craig, Jackie, Jeff, Jeff, Carlos, Shaun, Koko, Keith, Kai, Clinton, Manuel, Koby, Janean, Terence, Mailei, Colin, Tina, and Baldwin/Kapaa/Maui/Lanai/Kalaheo and friends and volunteers!

Special guest Mr. Landy Wang of Microsoft
Message: Be tech literate, broaden your horizons and upscale your dreams - and here's a way:

Picture

The Kalani FFA Maker group and Drone Trainers Tyler and Ephraim were treated to a presentation on Augmented Reality (AR) and Technology "Inflection" points (where major shifts and innovations appear) by special guest Landy Wong.  We learned how mainstream industrial revolution-based educational practices still define American education and were treated to a fascinating look at how schools can do a better job of getting students ready for today and tomorrow.  After the presentation, we saw prehistoric dinosaurs and insects on a Jurassic plain. Note: this was not VR, but AR, and viewers saw a blend of light images and the immediate surroundings.

How to get ready to be an AR contributer: learn coding, do projects, look at school as offering "building blocks" of knowledge and experiences you will need to succeed (and not as a place you have to be cuz your parents said so).

(A loosely written summary of some of Landy's talk that missed many key points but here goes)

Oohs, Aahs and AHAS

Memorization, regurgitation of information, timed test taking in isolation, prescribed recipe-driven canned experiments and the like typify high school instruction today.  These system artifacts were designed over a century ago for assembly line work and do not prepare youth for the worlds of today and tomorrow.

Reality calls for using smart technology to assemble facts, innovation as opposed to regurgitation, working in groups and sharing answers and ideas versus working alone, and open-ended experimentation with immediate data feedback and rapid prototyping and modeling - Would you play a round of golf and wait for months to get your score?  No.  The feedback must be immediate so corrective actions can be made.
A common experience noted by famous innovators enshrined in the Inventors Hall of Fame in Ohio was high school access to a lab or shop that provided opportunities to tinker and experiment.

Coding (any language) is a building block for tech literacy.  Learn it, Do it.

About Landy:
“When I approach a new project, I quickly envision the ultimate goal regardless of the constraints of the existing architecture, anticipate the potential pitfalls, come up with solutions ensure that the changes will fit seamlessly with the current system and then confidently proceed full speed ahead to completion,” Wang says. “I don’t like to compromise the fundamental tenets of the design process or any of the implementation of that design because doing so can potentially impact the entire ecosystem that is supported by Windows.”

(Sample non-traditional lesson - loose description of how a lesson can simulate the actual workplace)

A 45 minute Speed Lesson on Building a Model Car (thank you Landy and friends)

Setting:  High School Physical Science Class of 24 students
Common Materials and Supplies: dowels, tape, wooden wheels, cardboard, scissors, measuring tape, scale or balance, smart phone for timing/documentation.

Assignment: In 45 minutes, build a car that can roll down a ramp (inclined spare folding table) the greatest distance possible.

Parameters: Form teams of 3 (4 is too many, 2 too few); use provided materials; create a team name and write it on a common whiteboard or blackboard; it is ok to copy the ideas from other teams ("cheating" in traditional lingo), it is ok to share ideas (not allowed in traditional testing); build quickly - roll the car down the ramp - measure the distance traveled - record the distance and log time on common board; refine and do more builds based on data and observations, continue to log times for all to see.

Advice: Build quickly and do rapid prototyping/testing rather than mulling over designs, overthinking and wasting valuable testing and developmental time.

Post-experiment debriefing: Teacher facilitates discussion on concepts learned and formulae tested - for example, force = mass (times) acceleration,  speed = distance (divided by) time.

Sequence: Create your own process then extrapolate scientific principles.

Commentary:
Can you handle the freedom of thought presented by the world of Augmented Reality?  Try dreaming and building without rules and "no-can-do" regulations holding you back  (or keep drudging along and join the "Army of the Dull" - from TV Show "Cheers"). Remember, it is fine and ok to learn in traditional ways and enter the fields of work that operate with time-tested practices - but be careful cuz much traditional work is being replaced by software and robots and smart devices that do not get sick, do not need need pay/overtime pay, etc.

You have a choice.
